Background History
Symsay ~The Ancient One~
The old speaker took his place by
the fire, and related the story to the young ones
gathered in earnest. His gravelly
voice, aged with years and time began to relate to
them a story only whispered
throughout the millennia……..
Beyond the devastation of the
black molten lake of brimstone and fire upon the
fourth plane of Nine Hells,
resides Sidel, "Tourngraash the Manipulator", "Lifesbane
the ColdStalker", "High Chief
OverDaemon of the Sire Cauldeen".
His life's blood was the wars of
men. In tales told for generations, it was he who was
responsible for ending the Age of
Peace and bringing forth the Age of the Arisings. It
was his whispers in the ears of
men that brought about the Destruction of
Caarenfold, the greatest city in
the forming Empire. It was his tricks that turned the
Empress from the Emperor,
splitting the known world asunder. It was his conniving
that caused the Elven Race to be
mistrusted and eventually hunted. And it was he
who was responsible for the
Tenfold Razing's that incited Avari's Rage, which brought
down the Old Empire.
It was during the Age of the
Arisings that Sidel came upon the Dragonkind, Emera.
Mighty she was, clad in the
iridescence of her scales, shifting from green to black to
red to green, a kaleidoscope of
colors. To Sidel's dismay, this creature fought
alongside the opposing forces,
the humans, combining her breath with their steel. He
mused at this; the thought of a
Dragon fighting alongside mortal men beguiled him.
In an act of whimsy, he
shape-shifted into the form of a human champion, and
honorably challenged the
Dragonkind to single combat.
As honorable as she was
beautiful, Emera accepted the challenge to combat
amongst the Plains of the
Desolate, the area which once fruitfully held the vast
kingdom of Noldara, supposed
birthplace of the Elves.
When combat began, it was Sidel
who threw down his weapons in an act of mercy
and brought reason into the
fight. Through his manipulations, he uncovered the true
story behind the Dragonkind's
alliance with the Human Legions. It was Pelonius the
Usurper, who had sought to bring
the Dragonkind under his rule. His spies, under his
instruction found Emera's nest
and spirited away three of her eggs while he was in
audience with Emera herself, in
an attempt to sway her to taking sides in the
approaching war. When the
knowledge of her eggs abduction reached her, she was
forced into servitude under
Pelonius' fist.
Sidel, seeing opportunity beckon
to him, made an offer to the Dragonkind. Sidel
vowed he would find her eggs,
rescue them from their captors, and return them to
Emera, if she, upon the safe
return of her Dragonkind eggs, would change her
allegiance. In desperation, Emera
agreed.
Sidel dispatched his shadows to
every corner of the countryside, looking for
Dragonkind eggs guarded by men.
When they were found the Shadows attacked the
humans, leaving none alive to
tell the tale, or to get word to Pelonius.
Sidel returned to the Dragon
saddened and shamefaced. He had found the eggs, but
only two survived. The third, was
destroyed by the foul and cruel humans that had
held it captive. He had been too
late.
Abandon the war, he told her,
with tears flowing from his eyes. There was no bargain
between them. He had failed her.
Mourn, he told her. Turn away from the violence
wrought by the petty, murderous
humans she fought alongside, and mourn her lost
egg. He knelt before her and
offered his life in exchange for her youngling.
The wind whipped around him
marking the departure of the grieving Dragonkind, a
cruel smile crept across the
human champion's face.
It was said that Emera unleashed
such a fury upon her former human masters that
the telling of it still causes
the bravest of men to shudder and quake even after
almost four thousand years from
it's first telling.
Sidel returned to the fourth
plane carrying his prized possession, Emera's "destroyed"
egg. He had heard the prophecies
and the foretelling of a Daemon that would arise
from the under plane riding a
Dragon that was his loyal servant. This Being would
come and rule above all those who
had come before him. Sidel knew he was this
Being.
But one of the Dragonkind could
not be hatched except by it's own mother. If kept
away from its mother for too long
the egg would hibernate and possibly never come
to be. Fearing this the Daemon
used his magiks to pervert the egg and hatch it of
unnatural means.
What came forth from the egg was
as none as Sidel had seen before. It appeared a
cross of Dragon and Humankind.
The head and upright stature of a human, the
wings, tail and scales of a
dragon. But more importantly, Sidel could feel the strong
current of magik course through
the small body. This being had power.
He named her "Draga the Hell
Spawn", "Blade of Nine Hells". In later tales, her name
was told to be "Whisperer the
Little Bird", "Keevok the Trickster", and the name that
survives her to this day and the
one she calls true, "Symsay the KaosBringer".
Though he could not teach her
anything she would not learn on her own, it was his
lies that kept her under his
thumb. His lies of how she came to be, and why she must
be his. Lies about her mother and
the risks he had taken for her. Lies of her mother's
death, and the vow that he would
care for her in her youth and the eternal debt
that she would serve him forever.
His slave firmly bound to him, he set about her
lessons. Sidel claimed pride over
her teachings, but it is believed that Symsay's
magiks were inherent to her. It
was Sidel's folly to believe he could teach one as her
magik as one who could teach the
snow to fall, or the wind to blow.
Her most useful magik, the Mantle
of the Shapeshifter, was one that appeared while
she was still a hatchling. She
could change her form from the appearance of a
beautiful Elf maiden to that of a
Dragonkind, almost an exact replica of Emera, the
one who bore her. It was in this
form Sidel felt the hint of fear trickling down his
back like the victims of the
NightStalker Shadows that brought Death as quickly as
the Schreaver in a rage. It was
in this form that "Symsay KaosBringer" first achieved
the Dragon Fire akin to the
DragonKind. But unknown to Sidel, the power would
manifest itself in the half-form
that Symsay called her true form, making her even
more dangerous. Yet, Sidel was
confident that she would remain his to command.
As she grew, so did her powers
and abilities. She naturally acquired spells as other
children acquire height. She
could cast attack magiks as well as defensive. In
combat, she would shift to
dragonform, unleash dragon fire then cast a spell to step
through the folds of dimensions
to arrive back amidst the battle behind her
opponents. She would use her
illusions to draw the enemy in and destroy before it
was know she was there.
There were many things that
Symsay came to know which were a result of Sidel's
teachings, his cunning and guile,
his knowledge of combat, and the art of
manipulation.
While under Sidel's influence, it
was she, in the form of the Whisperer, who controlled
the thoughts of the Dwarf Thain
Brightforge, convincing him into war with the Dark
Dwarves and their leader Flintock
BlackHammer.
Within her first thousand years,
Sidel planned his uprising against the other rulers of
Nine Hells. Most cowered, fleeing
at the knowledge of the One Who Would Come
being the most powerful weapon in
Sidel's arsenal. In a campaign that would last two
thousand years, Sidel brought
eight of the nine planes under his rule. His greed for
power knew no bounds, Sidel set
his eyes on the ninth plane.
But, The Dark Lord Mephistopheles
ruled the ninth plane. He was the Grand High
Daemon. He was "He Who Sees All,
He Who Knows All". He had knowledge of Sidel's
treachery and planned his
defenses appropriately. For nine hundred years the battle
raged upon the ninth plane,
Sidel's forces against Mephistopheles' defenses, with
only Symsay being the deciding
factor. It was then that "He Who Sees All, He Who
Knows All" decided he must remove
Sidel's queen from the battle field.
The Dark Lord moved just in time.
As the Final Battle raged, as Sidel was
commanding his Daemonic Legions
astride Symsay in Dragonform, from among
Mephistopheles' armies a beacon
of iridescent light arose.
Ancient and Huge, Emera still
commanded respect above all Dragonkind. Her
legendary atrocities against the
legions of Pelonious filled the minds of all on the
bttlefield. She emanated a Dragon
fear so ferocious, the Dark Lord's own troops
scattered. Within seconds, none
stood on the battlefield, only two beings flew
above. To the naked eye, they
could have been mirror images. Symsay with Sidel
upon her back, clinging to
whatever confidence he still had, trying his desperately
not to give in to the Dragon
fear. Emera was not alone. Upon her back rode a human
knight.
They maneuvered passes toward
each other testing each other's mettle. The few
spells Sidel casted seemed
ineffective against Emera and her rider. Finally the two
Dragonkind attacked one another.
Ferocity mirrored upon the two. They raged
against each other, their riders
forgotten. Sidel fell, unseated from his mount, landing
harshly upon the naked
battlefield. Emera's rider accustomed to her rages, remained
astride.
When finally the Dragonkind
locked eyes, recognition flared. Before words could be
spoken, before Dragon Tears could
be shed, Sidel's treachery struck its final blow. A
Daemon Spear, barbed and borne of
the Bloodlust Magiks, pierced the heart of the
Emera. Symsay's mother ceased to
be.
In tales later told, it is
believed Sidel's last words uttered where, "I should have killed
you when I stole your egg."
Emera plummeted to the ground as
Symsay arced into her death dive towards Sidel.
Casting a protection spell, Sidel
sought to counter her magik. But Symsay fired her
Dragon fire and successfully
avoided Sidel's return magik,
Emera's body hit the ground,
sending her human rider running towards Sidel. His
helmet had long since been lost,
but the gleaming armor, stained with Emera's blood
was still intact. He gripped the
lance that he brought with him from the mortal world.
Heart Render hit its mark as it
had numerous times before, the weapon struck with
such a force that Sidel was
impaled completely to the lance's hilt, four feet of the
shaft was embedded in the ground.
Sidel, "Tourngraash the
Manipulator", "Lifesbane, the ColdStalker", "High Chief
OverDaemon of the Sire Cauldeen",
was no more. His body and the lance,
HeartRender, turned to stone, and
to this day it is said the Dark Lord Mephistopheles
keeps it as a trophy to his own
triumph.
Free of Sidel and his lies for
the first time in her long life, a grieving Symsay gathered
the unconscious knight and
returned to the World of Men.
But that is another tale…
